Vigado Jazz Club - May
The ensemble was founded around the turn of the millennium under the leadership of Mihály Borbély – an Artisjus, Knight’s Cross, Szabó Gábor and Liszt Prize-winning artist, and as a member of the Vujicsics Ensemble, also a recipient of the Kossuth and Prima Awards. Equally at home in folk and world music, jazz, and contemporary music, he brought together musicians of a similar artistic vision and mindset.
Their improvisational music is characterized by a fusion of various jazz traditions with the folk heritage of the Carpathian Basin and the Balkans, enriched by distinctive melodic turns, at times delicately transparent, at other times powerful rhythms, as well as contemporary musical elements.
The eMeRTon Prize-winning ensemble has performed extensively in Hungary and across Europe, and has twice enjoyed great success in Mexico. To date, six of their albums have been released by the prestigious BMC label, two of which (Meselia Hill and Gyere hozzám estére) received the “Hungarian Jazz Album of the Year” award in the critics’ poll of the respected Hungarian journal Gramofon.
Their most recent album, The Wonders of the Night, was also featured on the Recommended New Releases list of The New York City Jazz Record.
