Remembering Éva Keleti

The life and work of Éva Keleti, the Kossuth Prize- and Balázs Béla Prize-winning photographer who passed away on 6 February 2026, represent not only the history of 20th-century Hungarian theatre through photography, but also serve as an enduring source of inspiration for generations through her iconic images, which became legendary even during her lifetime. Her remarkable life, unwavering integrity, dignified character, and clear, honest voice earned her the profound respect of colleagues and fellow artists alike.

She led a determined life, never shying away from conflict when defending what she believed was right. She stood up not only for her own interests but also championed the entire field of contemporary photography and journalism, paying particular attention to the development of young photographers. Despite receiving countless awards and honours, and even as her health declined, she continued to work almost until her final days. At her last public appearance in December, she delivered a speech and gave an interview while preparing for the jubilee exhibitions planned for her 95th birthday.

During this memorial evening, we will pay tribute to Éva Keleti by screening a selection of her photographs and, together with our invited guests, recalling the most significant moments of her life and extraordinary career.
