From where to where?

The Film and Photography Section of the Hungarian Academy of Arts celebrates the 80th birthday of Ferenc Rófusz, Academy member, Kossuth Prize and Academy Award-winning animation filmmaker, and recipient of the title Artist of the Nation.

"I consider myself incredibly fortunate because throughout my life I have been able to do what I truly love. My hobby became my profession. When I began making animated films, I wanted to create something unlike anything that had been done before. That is how The Fly came into being, using a unique background-animation technique.

More than 45 years ago, I never dared imagine that the film would receive an Academy Award in the very country where this art form was born. My mother, who supported me in everything, always told me that if I truly believed in something, sooner or later it would become reality. That is why I always remained faithful to my ideas. Although she never said it quite this way, after forty years my long-held dream finally came true with The Last Supper.

I also consider myself fortunate to have worked during the golden age of Pannónia Film Studio, as well as at some of the largest animation studios in North America. And I feel equally fortunate that, since returning to Hungary 25 years ago, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the country's most talented animation professionals and to continue creating new films. Filmmaking is a collaborative art, and without them I could never have realised my dreams.

Finally, I would like to leave you with the motto of my film Ticket:

"The meaning of life is a meaningful life.'

Fortunately, I have been given exactly that."
